Hi Ian
Very many thanks for setting up a "troubleshooter" for me in response to my urgent need for assistance.  However,  I have now resolved that part of the problem which is the most significant, ie I got rid of some "infections" using free Ad-Aware and then on going into Amazon was immediately informed that I should enable cookies to proceed further.  I Googled "enabling cookies" and followed the instructions for my version and changed the privacy setting from High to Medium and bingo, I can now get items to "stick" in the basket, get into the Yahoo Mail box (which is where the spam usually goes) and get up the nearest garages for cheap diesel - all the things that I had been unable to do for some time. 

 

There is still the red cross icon at the bottom right of the screen advising me that a network cable is unplugged but this doesn't seem to make any difference to the functioning of the computer. 

I am so sorry to have involved you in telephoning etc but as an idiot as far as computers are concerned it is invaluable to me to have your expert service so close - which is why I advised Mike Vandenberg and Daisy Light to get their computers from you.   For me it's great that you have carried on John's good work.

I think that blowing out the video card must have done the trick!
